MUSCAT – The football community in Oman was left in shock and disbelief on Tuesday night following the untimely death of Abdul Salam Amer Al Mukhaini, a celebrated former international player and central defender for Dhofar Club. He was just 36 years old.
Abdul Salam was last seen on the pitch during the Super Cup match, where he showcased his talent as part of a victorious Dhofar team just a week ago. His impressive career began in 2010 when he made his debut for the Red Warriors, and he went on to represent some of the most prestigious clubs across the region, including teams in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.
Throughout his career, Abdul Salam achieved numerous accolades, including winning His Majesty's Cup with Al Arouba Club and the Oman Super Cup three times. Notably, he was also a key player for Kuwait Club during their successful campaign to clinch the Kuwait Premier League title.
On the international stage, he proudly represented Oman in the Gulf Cup and participated in Asian Cup and FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, earning respect and admiration from fans and peers alike.
Following the shocking news of his untimely death, heartfelt tributes flooded in across social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter).
The Oman Football Association (OFA), Dhofar Club, players, journalists, and fans expressed their profound sorrow and shared memories of a player who was known for dedication and skill on the field.
Abdul Salam played 70 international games for Oman and over 100 matches for leading clubs in the region.
Tributes continued to pour in from various segments of society praising Abdul Salam's gentle demeanour off the pitch and his toughness as a sturdy defender.
